If it hasn't been used for a while it might have dust on it that is burning off.

It also might have something spilled in there that is getting cooked out when it heats.

When the heater is unplugged and cold see if it looks like anything is in there that could be cleaned off.

If your heater is brand new, chances are it's just a little oil residue from the manufacturer.
It'll burn off and no longer be a problem. Dust too will burn off. If it smells like exhaust then your heat exchanger could be cracked and possibly leaking, or possibly your flue is no longer venting properly. If odor persists, call a pro. good luck.

most likely dust burning off.if you don't see any smoke it's ok let it burn until smell goes away.if this is the case i assume you are in a warm climate.if so you should run heater once a year cold are not that helps prevents that smell.i hope you have a maintenance agreement and they are checking the heat as part of your maintenance.this gets overlooked in warm climates but still should be checked once a year.

Carbon Monoxide has no odor. Unburned hydrocarbons do. I don't know what you are smelling, but it could be anything. I would check your house for carbon monixide though. To be on the safe side, your heat exchanger in the furnace could have a hole in it or your chimney could be plugged. Either way, the unburned hydrocarbons will be carrying some aount of CO.

Unless it persists, it's nothing ot worry about. Happens all the time whenever something comes in contact with the heat exchanger. re: dust accumulation, sometimes bugs, something dropped down a register and gets sucked into the heater......

Most likely it's dust burning off the heat exchanger or the heating element.

As for what it might cause - I've gotten a stuffy nose from it in the past.

Most likely it's dust burning off if it hasn't been used in a while, but if the problem persists for more than a couple days, you'll want to have your heat exchanger checked for any cracks, by a plumber.

It could be just dust, but it could be an electrical issue as well. There is a very distinct smell to electrical parts. Maybe someone you know is experienced with that side of things.
