80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Tough. First we need to know what we mean exactly when we use this phrase. Slight variations would be "have you found meaning in your life" or "do you know the reason you are alive on this earth and are confident that you are taking the road that you are meant to travel". I find meaning in life every time I stop to think about my circumstance. If I am joyous and feeling postive then I believe I am eperiencing the joy that I am meant to have and that I deserve. If I am frustrated, depressed or angry I interpret that as a signal that I am on the wrong road. This question is so simple and yet so complicated. When I lay my head down on my pillow every night and think about how etrordinary it is to know that my husband will always be with me, even when I mess up, I am filled with contentment. When my teenage daughter holds my hand or snuggles up next to me, I feel exquisite contentment. When one student tells me that I was the first teacher able to clearly eplain a concept, I am filled wih such satisfaction that it erases a week of beating my head against the wall. So, I would say one has found the meaning of his or her life maybe it's more of an inventory of our blessings.

Life is an eternal conflict between entropy and creative energy - we are merely reflections of the dissolution of everything which overshadows our potential as individuals and as a species.

Finding an escape from the continual cycle of creation and destruction would be the best thing we could wish for ourselves:

Yes. The meaning in life is what you make of it. You have to find something that makes you feel needed and useful. The enjoyment you receive from helping others or making things better improves your life. My life's meaning is my daughters and taking care of my sick father. They have brought me back from the depthes of hell. Good luck in finding yours.
