Ok my mom and stepdad use bleach to wash the dishes. I just got a glass of water and drank some and almost puked because the cup smelled like bleach. I did get a laugh though because my brother heard me say "I smelled the cup and almost puked." and then my brother said "If I smelled your breathe too, I would puke." He misunderstood me but it was funny. Ok my question is, what can I do about the smell in the cup?

I don't so the dishes because the bleach tears my skin up and there are no decent dish washing gloves in this house. Idk who did the dishes but I am sure they rinsed em, I hope.

I usually don't like using chlorine bleach to clean anything becaue the smell nauseates me and it's actually a very toxic substance
I use dishwashing liquid and baking soda and lemon juice to wash the dishes by hand
They shouldn't use bleach to wash the dishes. Bleach in high concentrations can etch and melt glass and ceramics
If I were you, I'd wash every dish in that household before using it, or at least rinse it.

I actually like the smell of bleach but I have never heard of using it for dishes. Why don't you just rinse your dishes first?
Small amounts of bleach are not toxic and the military uses bleach as an additive in drinking water at times.
Also the species hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion are present from the chlorine added to drinking water. The same operant species formed when adding bleach to water.

I do use bleach sometimes, if I have cooked meat and there is a lot of juices; but all you need in a whole sink of dishes is about one tablespoon, obviously they are using waaay too much. I guess you should rinse it in hot water before you use it, that might help. Or rinsing a cup with baking soda water might do it. I agree, that would taste nasty.

I used to tend bar long ago and we used bleach in one of the rinse waters to sanitize the glasses. I use it at home when I need to. I raise birds and weekly bleach their dishes but I rinse the heck out of them. I washed a coffee cup out with dawn, grabbed a cup of coffee and out the door I went. I guess I didn't rinse it at all. I gulped my coffee and got a mouth full of soap. That wasn't so good either. The answer is to rinse everything that you bleach extremely well. . .helps with soap too. . .

Yes on occasion we will add a small amount of bleach to the dishwasher.
The only way that you should get that smell is if the dishes were not rinsed properly.

I become very ill from the smell of bleach. I cannot use it or be around it because I will begin to wheeze. Good hot, soapy water will get dishes clean as long as they are washed (and rinsed) thoroughly. Most detergents for dishwashers already have a small amount of bleach in them.
If your parents feel that they must use bleach in the dish water, ask them to please rinse them in water as hot as they can stand. Bleach is very toxic. Get some good playtex rubber gloves and offer to rinse the dishes as a sign of compromise. ;)

I do! Before dishwashers were in all homes, we used about a capful of bleach for sanitizing purposes......now that I have a dishwasher, I still use a capful for sanitizing purposes...lol
Some old habits are hard to break, I guess.
Your mom is probably using WAY TOO MUCH bleach if you can taste and smell it.

be carefull. small amounts of bleach are ok, but mixed with dish soap that contains ammonia will create chlorine gas which in larger amounts is toxic. also if you can smell the bleach strongly in a dried cup, you're using way too much. a few ounces should be plenty in a sink full of water.

If you could arrange to ACTUALLY puke, it might make your parents think twice about using bleach on the dishes. Bleach is toxic and shouldn't be used on dishware unless it is very thoroughly rinsed off - which doesn't seem to be the case at your house.
