There used to be a rule (possibly in the NCAA) that said that an incomplete pass into the end zone on fourth and goal allowed the other team to take over on downs at the 20 yard line (instead of at the line of scrimmage). Does anyone else remember this rule? Am I remembering it correctly?

I think they changed the rule in the 1970s... or maybe before.

Maybe I'm not being clear: I think the rule said that if you threw a pass into the end zone on fourth and down, but didn't complete the pass, that the other team got the ball at the twenty (instead of where the play had started, as is the case now).

Yes, you are correct, but this was A NFL rule until sometime in the 60's

Yeah, I remember it. It was a good rule. Made it risky to throw on fourth down inside the ten. It was still in effect in the seventies.
