Saint Simon was a social reformer who founded a religion of socialism. His ideas for a new religion were set in Nouveau Christianisme, calling for social justice, abandonment of militarism, and a return to true Christianity, with its concern for the poor. After his death, his followers the Saint-Simonians, organized themselves into a communistic society, but in the 1830's they broke up. Saint Simon's ideas, however, were carried on by such influential 19th-century figures as John Stewart Mill, Thomas Carlyle, and Frederick Engels.
