Traditionally, C and C++ have been viewed as a compulsory language for every CS student. Nowadays, Java is seen to be more useful than any other language. It is now the most common language used in both education and industry.
If you know Java you can create web applications (applets), server-side applications (jsp), mobilephone applications, and many others. With Java, the possiblility is almost endless. Java is also the #1 required by the industry [1]
For me, however, Java is not my favourite. I prefer more on Python. Python is a very efficient programming language and is better than Java [2] and Php [3] It is very easy to learn. It can do everything Java do. Google use Python a lot in their core system. Many popular game engines also include python API for their user to create a game. [4]
To answer your question, you should go for Java because you might have to work with others for a group project. Computer industry also need it. But if you have spare time, try Python. You will enjoy it.
PS. After you understand the basic idea of HTML or XML, you can use a software tool to create them.
