it matters NOT where you exchange but WHEN that determines rate. Rates change constantly, so you could ask at noon and 1 minute after noon and get two very different quotes. When I needed a business quote for a foreign transaction, my boss and I would call two different banks at the same time and accept the better quote, so you could even get two different quotes AT THE SAME TIME.

I don't know about Australia but in the US is mostly bad to change it in the US, I always do it in Japan.

What I suggest is call your bank in Australia and see what the exchange rate they are going to give you, then check the exchange rate you can get in Japan and see which is better.

Mike, even though the interbank exchange rate is the same no matter what country you are in, it is no doubt the personal transactions and exchanges are very different depending on what country you are in, for example, in the US I always get a horrible exchange rate, while when I exchange it in Japan I get a much better exchange rate.

Always exchange money in the country whose currency you are going to be exchanging into.

Do it at a bank, not the airport.

Travellers Cheques usually get a better rate than cash, so if you have some perk (organization/credit-union membership, etc.) that gets you travellers cheques without commission get them.

I'd do it before you go... Once you get there, they KNOW you have no choice, you HAVE to convert your currency, so they are not obliged to give you a good rate. They know without exchanging, you have no local money... So, I'd do it before hand..

Just speaking from experience.

Enjoy Japan, you are going to love it!!!! It's a beautiful place, especially this time of year.
