Your doctor probably told you what limits you have for lifting. Follow those guidelines until he has a chance to do a followup exam to make sure it's healing properly.

No. Not yet. If it was truly dislocated then the tendons are already stretched and weakened if you do weights now you could pull it out again. Do keep it mobile by gentle stretching and rotations. Wait at least 2 full weeks, then start with low reps at light weights. Wait 3 days and see if there is any pain in the joint. If its not much, or not there at all, do light weights no more than ever second day, for the following 2 weeks. After that you can build up to full strength gradually. Over do it and you will put back your recovery time considerably.
Take care and good luck with the tryouts.

You should ask an orthpedic doctor. When I was 20 y/o I dislocated my shoulder skiing ( actually it was by falling while I was skiing :-) ). When I was 22 y/o I dislocated it again twice by lifting weights. No one had told me that the position my arm was in when My shoulder was dislocated would be the position that would be easiest to dislocate it again.

I would definitely begin to work it with lightweights.
I dislocated my shoulder last year. I also broke my arm. I really babied it and I don't want to scare you but about three weeks later I got frozen shoulder. I was told that if I didn't baby it, it wouldn't have froze. But when I went to pt, my therapist said that the frozen shoulder thing could happen to anyone that had trauma, so watch for signs of it. I would go to pt if you could. They can do other treatments that might prevent it from freezing.

The only advice I can give you is not to get medical advice off the Internet. Ask a physiotherapist. Someone may give you faulty and potentially harmful information.
