The lights are already installed (via a standard "hard wiring")and are activated by a standard on off switch. I would love to know if there is a device that exists that would be able to turn on and off the light either by solar activation or by a timer.

Thank You.

There are both. You can purchase a photocell socket that goes between the bulb and your fixture socket and will turn your light on at sundown and off at sunup. There is also an electronic switch that you can program to turn your lights on and off at times you determine. It goes in place of your current switch and is available at most large hardware retailers. I hope this has helped.

Home Depot stocks a few solar modules that require electrical modifications to your existing lighting circuits. Very easy to do. There's also motion detection sensors usually sold with flood lights kits but you can purchase them separately. They have a time delay usually 1 to 30 minutes of on time. I prefer the motion/solar combo units.

You can buy time switches that will fit in
a standard box replacing the normal snap switch.
You can also buy photo switches that you can
insert in the line feeding the lights.
The best solution depends on the situation.

My household always left them up for 12 days after Christmas, until Jan 6, but most people turn them off once the new year begins.

it come on at dawn goes off ,at dawn
try lowes, or any go hard ware store,
they come complete, for about $25 to $35
and very easy to install, three wires,
solar are pricey but once you buy them they last a long time

Call your local electric company and ask them what your options are and what the cost to put in a timer is.
