well for Windows....
delete ALL useless or unwanted/not needed files, then empty ur recycling bin, then go to 'start' and right click, then click the option 'explore', then a window will pop up and in the window to the left, will list programs, like mine says 'PRESARIO (C:)'(urs will probably have a pic of a device of some sort....:O)
which should be listed under 'my documents' and 'my computer', then u right click on that and choose the option 'properties'.Then another window will pop-up and will show u how much free sapce and used space u have on ur computer, then click 'disk cleanup' which will help ur pc ALOT, then when thats done, click 'tools' and then click the button that says 'defragment now' and once that is done, ur computer will run much faster.

Adding additional RAM often helps.
Removing programs you don't need can help, but it can be hard to tell what to remove.
Disk optimizing can help, if you have a semi-recent version of Windows, open explorer & right click on the C drive, choose properties, and look for the tools, there should be helpful stuff there.

Use the cleanup tool - remove the junk
Use the defrag tool - get your hard drive down to less than 1% fragmentation
If you can afford it - Add RAM - it's an eay upgrade with the most "bang for the buck"
All else fails - try Linux - Lighter footprint - better memory management - more choices
