In what condition is your bass-drum batter hoop? The Para-Clamp II, which Tama installs on current Iron Cobras, has some compliance on the top jaw; certain hoop designs are incompatible with this clamp. I haven't seen Mapex firsthand, so I have very limited info on this interface issue.

The Yamaha FP/DFP9000-Series have conventional hoop clamps, in terms of jaw design, so may fit better than the Iron Cobras in certain cases.

Some kick pedals are angles-sensitive in terms of the bass drum itself; as close to horizontal a bass drum as the spurs will permit should be a good starting point for properly setting the hoop clamp on the kick pedal.

Sorry, I've never used a double bass pedal...but it seems like your problem could be solved by actually using two bass drums (or adjusting the legs on the bass to tilt backwards just enough to keep the pedal squarely on the floor.)
