I really want to start playing some guitar but I am finding it hard to start out without a little instruction. Are there any good resources online that I can access for free? Or does anybody recommend a good self help book that can help me get started? Thanks.

You might want to get a DVD of guitar instruction through your public library.

It includes everything from selecting your guitar, stringing the instrument and of course how to play it. Check out his web site, it maybe just what you are looking for - it worked for me. A really good book of chords is Mel Bay's Guitar Chords it has EVERY single chord there is with diagrams that show you how to finger them.
