The 3 people were (I think) 1 white guy, 1 white girl, and 1 black guy. The movie started with the black guy trapped underground in a construction accident.

Read Ebert's review of Will Smith's movie, I Am Legend. Apparently, this is a remake of two earliler movies, one of which may have been from the 70s and sounds a lot like what you're describing. Ebert mentions the names of the two movies, so you can go to IMDB.com afterwards. Maybe you'll get lucky.
