A 1 gallon tank is only suitable for Bettas. And only barely for them.

With a 1 gallon fish tank, the only thing that would stay alive is a Betta and even that isn't enough room for him. A lot of people (sometimes not by choice, they just don't know better) and fish stores are ignorant when it comes to keeping fish. The thought of keeping goldfish in a bowl or a Betta in a glass is inhumane. Just because they stay alive doesn't mean they are healthy. Most people don't realize that goldfish get up to 12 inches and live for 10-15 years or that Betta's need 10 gallons to live in. So, after all that, you should either get a cheap 10 gallon aquarium kit from wal-mart or just keep a Betta.

You can usually find a very good deal on a 10 gallon aquarium kit at most fish stores. It should come with just about everything you need (filter, hood, etc.). You can find a small heater for less than $20. If you go that route you would have a nice set up for a small school of tetras or some male guppies, maybe an African dwarf frog or two. All are very active and interesting to watch. A single mystery snail would also be nice to clean up any algae or left over food.
If you go with the larger tank and cycle it properly before adding the fish you shouldn't have anymore problems with dying fish. I know it can be hard on the kids to lose a pet. This way both the kids and the fish will be happy.
Good luck!

A really cool freshwater fish would be a ghost fish. You shouldnt try to put more than one fish in a one gallon tank though. Ghost knife fish are really cool, they grow fast and they are very unique, and cute. I just got mine a month and a half ago cuz I loved the one in my boyfriends tank, and she is awesome. Loves blood worms. And they have an electric current so if another fish messes with them, they get shocked and leave them alone but they do not aggress themselves.
Then after that you could get any number of different fish, like a jelly bean parrot fish. Sounds like you want something more active, I would say get a semi aggressive fish. Or even get a couple sichlids. Jack Dempseys, or convicts are good. Just make sure you get the right tank for the fish. A one gallon is bout only good for a beta. Maybe time to upgrade???
Go to the petstore, talk to them, and get what will work best for you! It's a fun process. And by the way, you have to clean out the old tank anyway, so maybe upgrade to a little bit bigger one, and get it all set up and run it for a couple weeks to create a healthy environment for the fish BEFORE you put them in.

If you want another fish, other than a betta, you MUST get a bigger tank with a filtration system AND you must cycle the tank. If it is a tropical fish you are after, you MUST get a heater, as well (I sure hope your betta had a heater as they MUST have temperatures of 76-82 degrees to be healthy!)
One gallon is the BARE MINIMUM for a betta. And it is completely unacceptable for any other species of fish, especially more than one!
Refer to the links below for guidance on aquarium stocking and cycling.

ONe gallon is only good for a single betta really, consider upgrading to a 10 gallon tank. And try to buy mollies, they will give birth to live babies and I am sure that your kids will hvae a blast raising baby fish!

One gallons is only big enough for a single betta. You could get a ten gallon, but even then your choices are limited.

you cant get anything else for a 1 gallon tank. those small tanks are made for bettas. you would proballly have to upgrade your tank to a 5 gallon to get probally 4 fish for it. I would recomand getting a 10 gallon tank because you can get for fish for it.

neons, and other small fish but you would need a filter, a heater, and a bigger tank.
