What size tank do you have? As you know, they need shells, and a larger footprint is better because it allows them more territory. How about some Neolamprologus brevis, N. caudopunctatus, or N. ocellotus. You should be able to find them all for less than $15 a fish (the Brevis will probably be about $10). For non-Cichlids, consider Synodontis Catfish ($10-25 a fish, depending on the species) or Congo Tetras (schooling fish;$10-15 a fish).

EDIT: The Cichlids I listed above are shell dwellers, so be prepared to get them some shells if you want them to exhibit their fascinating behavior. They will only reach a bit more than 2 inches at the most, so you could easily have a few pairs of two or three shell dwellers that would breed for you (if they are given plenty of shells for homes and sand to burry their shells in). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I'm not sure you can put anything with ciclids, they are very aggressive. I'd check with your local fish emporium...
