y/a just turned 2 years old. This means that this question has been asked an average of 179 times every month!

How's that for showing how effective the search bar is?

OK, what now?

No, the planets will not align. It is mathematically determined that the planets will NEVER align during the entire life span of the Sun. Oh...what if they did you mean? It would have the terrible effect of raising tides 1 1/2 inches!

A comet in 2019 huh? Well at least that's a break from the old killer asteroid. I'll tell you what - and I am being serious here - you tell me the name of the comet and I will look it up for you. I need something more to go on than 'big comet'.

The end of the Mayan calendar has been interpreted to be the end of the world yes. But NOT by the Mayans. NOT by scholars. NOT by historians. Not by scientists. But by your internet hoaxers who are trying to make a quick buck off of those who are uneducated and gullable. Your psychics, doomsayers, channelers, new agers, and resurrectors of Nostradamus and Cayce. And anyone who can come up with a reason to sell a book.

New era. Nope.

I will explain this as I see it:

Someone comes up with a nut idea to see how stupid people are. Maybe as a sick joke. What if I say, 'yes the planets will align in 2012 and it will knock Earth out of orbit and the poles will flip.'

There is sure to be SOMEONE SOMEWHERE who is going to believe me. It doesn't matter if I present no proof or evidence. This person is either too unintelligent or too lazy to research the truth of it. The next thing you know is they are saying to their friends, 'I HEARD that... blah blah.' Just like the sentences in your question. Next its, 'My friend said that someone saw on the internet...blah blah. So it MUST be true!' On and on it goes until someone (like you and 4,000 others)who seeks confirmation comes to y/a for a quick answer. Most of the people in the astronomy section care about science, truth and humanity so lo and behold it's up to us to educate and try to knock some common sense into people. I've witnessed the reduction in the number of persons who respond to 2012 questions. Just because after thousands of the same question, it gets old so apathy sets in. You can only try to set people straight on the subject before you just don't give a damn what they want to believe in anymore.

The other side of the coin brings in fanatics like Jeff who preach about Nibiru even though we have told him time and again that it is fiction. Some people will hold onto their beliefs even when there is no proof. I have asked Jeff for evidence that Nibiru can be seen from the southern hemisphere but he doesn't respond. It's not difficult to understand why.

And there are a multitude of persons like synthuir who talk about the Mayans when they have no idea whatsoever of the topic. When I correct them and say that the Mayans NEVER spoke of the end of the world. That it is only persons living TODAY who have been saying it in the last five years. I ask synthuir for proof that the Mayans said such a thing. I never hear from these persons either.

There are a lot of people who think that they know about 2012 because they HEARD something or they went onto youtube or a pseudowebsite and read that the world was ending and they believe it. They don't bother to check for facts or the credentials of the webpage author or go to a SCIENCE book or website to see if these hoaxes could possibly be true. That would take too much effort. That would ruin their magical dreams of being alive to witness the end of the world.

I guess I'm getting too tired of it all too. Soon I will join the others who don't give a damn about trying to correct people on this topic. Five more years of this? Not for me.

This isn't the first time that the end was proclaimed. Although it will probably go down in history as the EASIEST hoax of them all since so many remain ignorant of the truth behind the Mayan calendar. When 2013 comes, maybe it will all be forgotten and just giggled at by those who believed. They will find another date for the end to latch onto.

Jeff will undoubtedly come up with a reason why Nibiru didn't show this time either just as it didn't show in 2003.

There are sure to be more asteroids and comets to preach the end of the world and the multitude of followers who cannot seem to waste the time to conduct any research on them first.

I would suppose a new breed of answerers will come to y/a to try to quelm the rumors with truth.

And so it goes.

Happy holidays.

truthfully, 2012 is genuine. It comes after 2011 and until now 2013. it is likewise real that there is a Mayan day-count huge style calendar (utilized by Mayan astronomers as much as around the 10th century) the place a date we call 2012.12.21 might have had a around determine (thirteen.0.0.0.0) in the Mayan's weird and wonderful counting equipment. it is likewise real that presently after that date (someplace around February 2013) the placement we call 'iciness Solstice' would be in the trail of the Milky way (what we now call the Galactic equator). The Mayan astronomers might have properly-known that (in the previous days, everybody knew with reference to the precession of the equinox, which comprise the Mayans, the Greeks , the Babylonians, the chinese language, the Indians...). it is likewise real that 2012 is an Olympic year. --- something is crap. The solar does no longer line up with the Galactic centre (it won't be able to). The planets do no longer line up (2012 is truthfully a undesirable year for planetary alignments). No asteroid on a collision direction. Planet X, Nibiru and Nemesis are innovations by charlatans who had anticipated the top of the international for... 2003. Magnetic polarity reversals take 5,000 years on wide-unfold... and we are no longer even confident that the subsequent one has even began.

Search on "Mayan Long Calendar" to find out what this hoax and hype is all about.
Its all a misinterpretation of the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. No big deal, our calendar ends every year and we just start a new one. So would the Mayans if there were any practicing their ancient religion today.

every 3600 years, niburu, or {planet x} crosses through our solar system on its orbit. It is our most recently discovered planet, and furthest away. The last time it passed by, is said to be most likely Noahs great flood. It is visible now from earth, but only at the most southern parts of our planet. It will be at its closest distance in dec thru march 2112. most likely we'll have just really nasty weather, but its said it could have effects on earths axis, and that would be bad
