That is something for the couple to decide and agree upon. It should not be too many years because then the wedding is notas likely to take place.

Not 6 months to a year. I have been engaged for just about a year, we just had a little boy 5 weeks ago. Were going to get married in 2009. I want to enjoy my engagement, enjoy my fiance, enjoy my son. Were picking up things here and there as we go. So it won't cost so freaking much at the time we do get married. And this will be my 2nd marriage. Things seem so much more relaxed when there isn't all the planning, and having to buy everything...I remember running around with my head cut off during my first wedding. There seems to be this race to get married in the year of the engagement. Just take your time, and plan a wedding that will happen in the 2 years after the engagement.

As long as you feel necessary. I'd say the average is 6-8 months. The both of you have to be ready and usually it's good to make a decision when you get engaged.

It's different for everyone. My husband asked me to go ring shopping after we'd been dating for only a month. He proposed 3 months later and we were still getting to know each other. My mom made him promise to have a longer engagement and we agreed to that. We got engaged in late 2003 and got married in late 2005 - it worked out wonderfully and we've now been married over 2 years and together almost 5 years.

Do whatever feels right for you and gives you enough time to really plan the wedding.

There's not a set engagement time...If you feel the time is right 5 minutes after the proposal then do it, who cares when love is in the air. BUT if you know you need more time to see if that's really what you want to do, then maybe a proposal is the wrong thing in the first place.

As long as you 2 need to plan the wedding or finish school etc. Don't rush into things. Just don't wait too long or else you may get tired of just plain being engaged! :) Happy New Year.
