It's called projection. We watch a movie for entertainment and to really enjoy the experience we participate in the movie's attempt to transport us to the place and time illustrated on film.
The more we are able to do this, the better we like the experience. Therefore, we assist the efforts of the writer, actors, set designer, producer, director theater, the works.
I am, for example brought to tears in both of Woopie's movies were she is hiding in a catholoic church in what has become a ghetto.
The singing and arrangements are absolutely exceptional and very effective. Of course, I am somewhat musical.
IN Jurassic Park I want to be transported back in time to experience the fear and astounding experience of appearing to witness past life forms, scary life forms!
If you think about it...it is the actor's job to do the scene...as us!
I experienced the full gamut from joy to tears in, "A Beautiful Mind".

1) Sometimes a similar experience is happeing in your life.
2) You get so into the movie that you feel as if you're a part of it. For a little while, you seem to forget about your life and become part of the protagonist.
3) They forget it is a movie and feel empathy towards the character.
4) Reminds them of something.
Hope this helps a little. :)

Some people think it is real & so do cry. Guess they get themselves too attached to the characters on the screen & identify themselves too much with them
The trick is to see the reality :
i ) They r fictious characters on the screen
ii ) They r all third persons - and not u nor related to u.
iii ) All the happenings on the screen are fictious inventions of a sadistic soul.

If you don't cry, then you must be a tree or rock without any feeling. Over emotional movie will make you cry although we know that crying for nothing is not relevant.
That is human nature.

because when you're watching the movie,, you intend to be part of it..like if it's scary you intend to scream and get nervous with the protagonist..You seem to take part of the movie that's why you intend to be emotional in watching..
