Usually it is when the contractions are 5 minutes apart that you would leave for the hospital. When you said that you had a pain in the side, the thought came that if the baby is twisted in the cord or in the wrong position "may " cause that pain. Usually it is not really a "pain" until you are ready to deliver. It is a contraction. Just in case, I would leave for the hospital earlier than 5 min apart. Also, better not to eat before you go in. If you are very hungry, a little cream of wheat may be ok. Congratulations! It is a wonderful experience. I hope it is very easy for you. The process is very easy. The difficult part is the anxiety of not knowing what to expect the first time. Stay relaxed, think lovely thoughts, and know you are in good company. Best of all, you'll only remember the best moments as the years go by. Mother Nature's blessing.

I just had a baby 4 months ago and I can tell you one thing, when you start having real contractions, YOU WILL KNOW!! LOL They will become regular and will become closer together. The first day I started having contractions, they were very irregular and didn't hurt too bad. That night, I woke up at 1:30am because I had severe pain and tightness in my abdomen. The contractions were about 5-6 minutes apart and getting stronger and closer. You might not have had this yet but your mucous plug might come out soon too...t his will mean that your cervix is opening and letting it fall out. You will know when this happens as you will have a lot of egg white like substance coming out of your vagina. You also might start to have a "bloody show" which is a slight tinge of red blood in the mucous, also another sign of labor. It's really hard to say when exactly you will go into true labor, just have to wait. What I did that night was eat KFC!! haha It might have just been coincidence but it worked.

I've been where you are with all 3 of my kids! It is so hard and annoying waiting for the real thing isn't it?
I wad dilated 2cm and 100% effaced with the baby dropped for about 3wks with my 3rd child. So annoying.
I honestly can't say if you are or not. I know it is tough waiting. I rushed to the hospital having contractions 5mins apart a few times with my 1st child and 2nd child. Always sent back home too. I would cry & be so upset.
With my 3rd child we wouldn't take any chances. I had contractions for almost 3wks! The uterus is a muscle so it would get tired and hurt. I was told I was in false labor at each dr appointment. So we just waited and waited. Even though I had 3 kids I never went into labor on my own. My 1st was an emergency c-section. My 2nd was induced. So I just waited and waited.
It will happen. You will know when it is time to go. Mine happened in the middle of the night. I woke up thinking "I'm still contracting." I got in the tub to relax and couldn't relax. It hurt. I woke up my husband & we timed them and waited a bit longer. Then call his mom.
Trust me. You are not alone. Even as a 3rd time mom I didn't know for sure. You can always call your dr and tell them what is going on.
I know it is hard to wait and no know. Hugs, Ashley

You're going to experience "Brax and Hicks", a preliminary run that your body puts you through a month or weeks before the baby is born. A dry run kinda. Sounds like what you're having. But don't ever feel weird about calling the doctor and asking. Someone I knew never experienced the painful contractions of labor in the back or lower in the stomach and pelvis. She had diarrhea a couple hours before and then her water broke and labor was almost over before she knew what was happening. Everybody has different levels of pain or discomfort, but generally labor will pick up in pain level and last longer and happen more frequently as the labor progresses. If your water breaks or you start spotting blood, then you're definitely in labor. Good Luck.

Sounds like you are probably having Braxton Hicks contractions. BH contractions feel like a hardening of the abdomen and are irregular and often unpredictable.
When I had real contractions the felt similar to bad menstrual cramps very low in the pelvic area and they circled all around to my back like a belt tightening. I had them all day running errands and cleaning house before I went to the hospital with my second child. Once they were about 5-6 minutes apart we left the house.
Dilation and effacement are not really a predictor of when you will deliver. Women have walked around for weeks 100% effaced and 3cm. But since you are so far along it will probably be in the next week.

It's normal to have contractions, even before it's time to go into labor. Try to relax and make sure you're getting plenty of water, as dehydration can cause contractions to occur. When you're in labor, your contractions will become increasingly stronger and closer together. How fast this happens will differ among pregnancies.
It is possible to have a false labor, during which the contractions are unpredictable and vary in length and intensity. Since your contractions are not anywhere near each other, you are not in active labor.
If you think your water has broken, go ahead and go to the hospital, even if you aren't having contractions. Good luck!

Hmmm. Sounds like pre-labor. I had pre-labor for several hours, and once the real labor came . . . well, it was a whole different animal! I knew it! Everyone is different, though.
It really depends on how far away your hospital is. Mine was 40 minutes away, and I went far too early.
Can you sing a happy little tune during the contraction? If so, it's probably not time yet. If it comes out more like "Aaargh!" then it's time to get to the hospital. Travelling may slow down the labor process.
But if you are stressed out, it's better to be stressed out in the hospital than at home.
Good luck!

And now for the voice of calm and reason....
No need to panic. It is possible you're in labor but not likely. Has your water broken? Are the contractions increasing in frequency and intensity? Those are signs of labor. One responder tried to describe Braxton Hicks (named after the physician who first noticed and described them) contractions. It does sound more like what you're having. See the link below for more on Braxton Hicks, and on the difference between them and true labor.
A non-paniced call to an advise nurse might be a good idea. And whenever your baby does come, congratulations.

It sounds like prelabor. I would wait until you have to constantly breathe through them and each time is like 4-5 minutes a part. but the state you are in now..you could go in labor now or as late as next two weeks. I was 1 cm and 50% for 3 weeks straight with my second and 2 cm and 80% for 5 weeks with my first.

each pregnancy is different, so it's hard to tell, but sure sounds like it to me. You'll know it's a hard contraction when you want to pull your husband's bo-dangles up over his head (just kidding). Start timing them, then call your doctor in an hour. If you pass the mucuos plug, or your water breaks, you're in labor right now and get your butt to the hospital! A Christmas baby...how nice!
