The friend kind of has to deal with it in his/her own fashion. Don't push, but do be there. Call your friend up to chat about nothing. Invite him/her over to your house. If Christmas is a total no-go, then concentrate on doing something fun over New Year's with that person. Having something to look forward to might make him/her feel better.
If s/he is depressed, physical activity and sunlight might help. How about ice skating? Building a snowman? Going for a nature walk in the local park? Finish up with a nice chat over cocoa.
It doesn't have to cost a lot, and it doesn't need to be much. Even the thought counts!

Your friend had a rough year, for what? You are seeing him little to look forward to this Christmas! My dear friend, you first try to understand the real meaning for Christmas. This Day is celebrated to remember the Birth of Jesus Christ, an un-comparable gift of God to this world. The Christmas day is not merely for a celebration, but also to renew, understand and practice the Great Teachings Jesus gave to mankind.
If your friend had a rough year for want of money, then the teachings of Jesus is enough and you can give him this teachings to cheer him up. I am sure he has plenty to look forward, if he is encouraged and advised to repent for any wrong things he has done. Please make use of this wonderful occassion, Christmas Day -2007, to cheer up your friend and many other people who are facing this type of life. Let Jesus give you the strength & courage to under- take this Great task.
Best wishes for a joyous, fruitful Christmas - 2007 & a Happy New Year -2008.

Talk about some of the fun things that you two have shared together. Let them know how much you care, and that no matter what comes their way, you are a friend they can always depend upon. You can't ask for a better gift as far as a friendship goes. Be there for them.

Just extend an invitation for your friend to spend Christmas with you and your family. That's all you can do without ruining Christmas for yourself. Your friend has to want to be "cheered" up because some people want to wallow in the self-pity.
(I know this isn't the answer you want, but it's true.)

Invite your friend to spend Christmas with you?
Make some plans for the new year that involve you both doing something nice?
be there for your friend, listen and be a shoulder to cry on when/if needed.

Take them out for dinner or coffee and just be there to listen. Sometimes just having someone to talk to can make all the difference in the world. Don't try to fix their problems just listen.

If your friend is male, you already know what to do. If your friend is a lady, you might take her out to lunch, or go shopping and buy her something nice. Might get her mind off her "blues"...
Just a suggestion!

Don't bring him along where he will not know anyone but you. have someone he might be attracted to, come along if you do. You can not force happiness, it has to be applied gently. You can spend some time with him, and get him to tell you about himself, things that you might find funny and entetaining to share with you.
