Yeah, it does work a little. Not to the point you will get double the life out of them or anything like that. I used to know how and why but I forgot. I learned this in Science class a long time ago. I was 2nd in the class Edison was #1. :-)

Some of earlier answers are confusing wet cell and dry cell batteries. Of course you shouldn't store a wet cell in the fridge as freezing damaga can occur, but dry cells will benefit from being stored in the fridge (not freezer) as the chemical reaction that produces the electrical current will be slowed hence extended.

Refrigerator, not freezer and alkaline batteries are currently (electrical joke there) good for a shelf life of 7-plus years with no special care and no loss of power. Why take up the fridge space?

Heat is an enemy of dry cell batteries, just store them in a cool place. Putting them in the fridge will not make them last any longer.

No ! It's not a good idea, If a battery is low on charge there is a danger of freezing, this could crack the casing and it has happened . If you want to extend the usable life it's better to keep it on a trickle charge in a normal room temperature, and keep it topped up with distilled water to just a little bit above the plates, if it is a sealed battery you won't have to bother with topping up

bad idea, cold will drain them, store at room temp,
we had to carry extra batteries for radios in our shirts in Korea to keep them from discharging,
