"heads up, trouble is coming" is the full saying (i think) but usually we would only have time to say 'heads up'

thats my question! lol i've wondered that. hm. maybe it's because if you said "duck!" the person would look up to see if you were talking about the bird or something hurtling through the air at you. but when you say heads up, you're kinda telling them to lift UP their head. hm. idk. lol i guess it's one of lifes mysteries.

i always thought it meant to look out because something is coming at you from above...

like heads up = look up and pay attention before you get whacked with something

it sorta gets your attention.
once, me & my best friends were playing football (American) in the house, and i yelled heads up & threw the football. My friend ~looked up~ and it hit her smack on her forehead.
