12 inches = 1 feet (12" = 1')
12' / 5' 6" = 40' / x"
where x is the height of the tree in inches
12*12 / (5*12+6) = 40*12 / x
x = (40*12)*( 5*12 + 6) / 12*12
= 480*66 / 144
= 220 "
height of the tree 18' 4" (18 feet 4 inches)
How much taller than Dave is the tree
Height of Dave = 5 feet 6 inches = 66 inches
height of the tree = 220 inches
difference = 220 - 66 = 154 inches
= 12 feet 10 inches

Let the height of the tree be x inches.
Find the height of David in inches:
5 ft 6 in = [5(12) + 6] in = 66 in
Find the length of the shadow caused by David in inches:
12 ft = 12(12) in = 144 in
Find the length of the shadow caused by the tree:
28 ft = 28(12) in = 336 in
(144 in) + (336 in) = 480 in
Find the height of the tree:
x : 480 = 66 : 144
x * 144 = 480 * 66
144x = 31680
144x / 144 = 31680 / 144
x = 220
Find the height of the tree in feet and inches:
220 in = 18 ft 4 in
Hence, the height of the tree is 18 ft 4 in.

7 feet and 4 inches. First you divide the trees shadow by the persons shadow. Then multiply that by the by the persons height (5.5). You then should get 12.8333333333 which equals 12 feet 10 inches. Subtract that by his height.

Let the tree be x feet tall.
5.5 ft (Dave) casts a shadow 12 ft long
12 ft shadow means height is 5.5 ft
1 ft shadow means height is 5.5/12 ft
40 (28+12) ft shdow means height is (5.5/12)(40)= 18 1/3 ft
18 ft 4 inches.

66 - 12
x - 40
x = (40x66)/12 = 220
220 - 66 = 154. 154 inches or 12 feet and 10 inches
I think..
Emma C you need to substract 5 feet and 6 inches from your answer, because it asks for the difference

IDK how to work this out. I tried
making equivalent fractions or
making a scale for Dave to the tree.
I'm not much good at math so i suggest you try doing one of those things urself.
oh i feel stupid now to everyone elses answer.
