Americans PAYING into this mythical "free ride?" Are we not entitled to the government that we pay into, or are the handouts only reserved for the corporations that deserve it the least (because they already receive so many breaks, subsidies, and avoid paying taxes by relocating)?

I heard this used for everything--disaster relief, health care, and even Social Security and other well deserved and long-standing government programs!

Yeah, the corporations do put in the least and benefit the most, that's true. And I work and go to school unlike many and I've never been on welfare or gotten any handouts myself, so I don't know what "everbrook" is talking about. I suppose some people need a disaster or tragedy to happen to them before they suddenly have any empathy for anyone else but themselves.

I think we are entitiled to health care. Why? Because we're already paying into it. Government assistance goes into private hands anyway because the private HMOs are staying afloat AND turning a profit with the assisance of us (the government). Our money would be better spent if it were completely out of private hands and profit. This would insure that waste (private profits) is eliminated and that our money can go into helping EVERYONE for any health concern--not just the very poor for costly emergency visits.

It's should not be a matter of any "free-ride", but, more to do with how long one is on assistance(currently 5 yrs is the welfare limit...do you believe anyone cannot get a job within 5 yrs). I have seen clients whom have gone from welfare to claiming permanent disabilities. Additionally, a lot were able-bodied drug addicts and there is no oversight to get these people off from receiving aide. It helps to only buy more drugs for a lot of lazy bums. Welfare reform is real and happening, soon SSI reform will replace it.

America the Beautiful, The land of free handouts, from sea to shining sea.

Next time want to see new car's show, come to welfare office.
Welfare Cadillac is a political phrase used in the United States for an anecdote intended to illustrate a case of a person or group receiving public benefits where the benefits are not actually needed by the recipient or are obtained by fraud.

The imagery is of a person arriving at a welfare office in a Cadillac automobile to pick up a welfare payment. The implication is that the person does not need the benefit, since a Cadillac is an expensive car, that the benefits are so generous that the person can drive a Cadillac while most working people drive cheaper cars, or that the person is "gaming the system" to receive sufficient funds to purchase and keep an expensive car.
I think anyone who needs help should at least be willing to earn it. But, when you consider the fact that a lot of people living off welfare are too dumb, too lazy, or both, to go out and get an honest job, you can understand why they live off it. If more people were willing to earn their living, we wouldn't have a welfare system that is completely out of control.

We need to bring back programs like the
WPA. If you need assistance you work eight hours a day cleaning along the roads, fixing retaining walls, forestry service, whatever.

A helping hand is one thing, a person who lives off the kindness of the taxpayers is yet another. If someone is working hard to make their life better and needs a little assistance occasionally, I have no problem with it. I would think its called a free ride if someone who never pays into the system is constantly receiving benefits from taxpayers or is on assistance when it is not needed.

If one does nothing but sit and wait for their check to arrive each month they are taking advantage of hardworking taxpaying individuals, they are also taking money away from hardworking, good people who could be spending that money taking care of their own families.

It's called a "free ride" because those accepting the ride have contributed nothing at all to provide the "ride" Did it ever occur to you that corporations wouldn't outsource so much if the taxes and regulations weren't so back braking here? And, no, you are *NOT* "entitled" to any care from the government... if you pay in or not... The basic purpose of Government is to protect the people (police and the military), build roads and maintain trade. Anything beyond that is extra and why taxes are so high...

Ah, republicans at their best, most anyway. I'm sure there are those who can't stand what this administration has and is doing, I can't paint them all as deaf, dumb and blind. The power in the GOP is I'm sure all for the bailout of financial institutions. The base rationalizes it away by saying if you don't save the business look at how many people it will affect. Guess what, look at the amount of people they have already affected negatively. As the company's poor business practices are revealed, the stock drops and the company lays off people anyway. For those blaming the democratic congress, let me remind you the dems control the house only. The senate is split and the president still has his veto pen. So how have democrats created this mess? Where is the republican accountability I have heard so much about for decades?

the governt does not have the constitutional right to take monies from one citizen and give it to another or to a corporation.if one understands the constitution and reads the papers of the federalist and antifederalist from the founding father. you would realize, no one has a right to make a living off the government.

and to you people, who think 16th amendment gave the government the right to tax you on a direct bases, check out the supreme court decision on the 16th amendment.or stay sleepables! Pay your fair share, sound like Lenin!

No one is entitled to anything. That is your big misconception. We all pay in to help those that need it through sickness or circumstance.. That is our choice and we accept it. But no-one likes a slackard thinking they are entitled just for that fact they were born here, snuck in here, or just because they resperate. This is the land of opportunity not free rides.

Because normally, the people taking the MOST out of the system are the ones putting in the LEAST.

If you don't pay taxes and collect government benefits, you are getting a free ride. The people who pay taxes and don't get government benefits are getting hosed.
