There are adapters which allow external antennas. If you use one you can get much better coverage. Some even have DIRECTIONAL antennas you can "point" at the Access unit and pickup even better.
Check with
http://radiolabs.com
they have some "package" deals for just your situation
like the http://radiolabs.com/products/wireless/waverv2.php
highpower system. or http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wireless/networking/long-range-notebook-wifi-kit.php etc They even have yagi and dish antennas (If your wireless card has a connector --most don't!)

http://defactowireless.com has some great units for really long distance. They also have specialized antennas. Also some units with combined radio/antenna combos that connect to your ethernet port and then antenna mounts outside. (We use these for connections several miles away from the AP!)

You will have to use an antenna designed for and used for Wifi to get better coverage and Your wireless card will have to support "external" antenna connections!!!
