Well, charlie horses are muscle spasms which are caused by factors such as having too much blood in the muscle, and stiff or sore muscles. It may be because of restricted bloodflow, or low potassium levels, so good things to take to prevent it are vitamin supplements, foods with vitamin e, foods with magnesium, or foods with potassium, i.e. bananas. You will notice that while you have one, your foot is bent downward, away from the leg, as far as possible because of the muscle. I have found the easiest way to make it stop hurting at that instant where it happens is to bend your leg at a very small angle, only around 12~23 degrees, and make your foot bend as far towards the leg as possible, and it will stop hurting.
After a charlie horse passes, you may have some pain when trying to walk normaly for a few hours, and pain in your calve when running for a few days

It's a cramp. It happens because lactic acid builds up in your muscles, interrupting their movement a bit. Eat more things with potassium like bananas and this should become less of a problem. Stretch it gently and the pain should subside a bit, but don't stretch it too much at first. Also, it it really hurts, only ice it the first day and after that, heat it for 15 minutes then ice for 15 minutes and the pain should begin to lessen.

Why do we call a sudden arm or leg cramp a "Charlie horse?" The term's origins stretch back to late 19th-century baseball slang, but the exact source is as clouded as a dusty slide into home plate.
At any rate, it's painful! The best thing to do is get up, and walk it out.

It sounds as if you had a muscle spasm. Check to make certain that you are getting enough salt & potassium in your diet.
If it happens again be sure to curl your toes out and up as quickly and as hard as you can. This usually relives the spasim in the leg by streching the muscle.

I've gotten them before. They're from your muscles not getting enough potassium after you work out. Just eat more bananas and you won't get them anymore.

It's severe cramping. The next time you get one, press hard on the middle part of the muscle, and that will relieve the cramping.
