how much weight does columbia put on community service for accepting undergrads? I have about 100-120 hours on record and hope it will help me. If this helps, my gpa is close to a 4, I've taken all the APs and difficult courses I can, and I'm part of several clubs. My SAT score, I have yet to get back but I'm confident I scored around 1700-1800 based on PSAT results.

All schools take community service into account. But you have to realize that it is easy to fake, hard to verify -- and most of the people applying to Columbia have great extracurriculars. The interview and admissions essay become critical in getting in.

It sounds like your grades are in the right ballpark -- but if your SAT projections are right, your chances at Columbia won't be very high. 75% of those accepted have 2100 or better,

In general, people think that Community Service matters in college admissions a lot more than it does. If you've raised $30,000 for charity, or started a non-profit-- that's one thing. But if you've done 50-300 hours of service, there are PLENTY of people out there like you. For places like Columbia you have to have the grades, APs, and test scores. After that, it's whatever makes you stand out personally.

I think it is safe to say many colleges( Columbia included) will take community service into account. It helps you stand out in a crowd of thousands of applicants. If it really means a lot to you, you should also go into detail in ones of the essays on how it has had an impact on your life. Colleges will really like that and it would give them an inside look on your personality.

Because Columbia is an Ivy, it is hard to tell exactly what criterion they use to admit students. I'm sure that community service matters though I am not sure how much because it can differ from applicant to applicant.

I'm sorry this answer is so vague, but it is because it is so hard to tell how the Ivy League admissions system works and how to admissions committees judge applicants.
