A song that only got a little country airplay in the early 80's after it was in a movie with a pretty well-known lead actor, and was done by an artist usually associated with early 60's rock music. If this ends up being a stumper I'll add a few hints.

Not Kenny, the artist isn't one you'd normally associate with country music at all.

Or Linda, I'll even add that the movie isn't Urban Cowboy, and also that the movie I wouldn't consider "obscure", it did OK at the boxoffice.

The artist was shown performing the song in the movie, it was not much more than a cameo appearance. Probably lip synched as it sounded the same on the radio as in the movie.

Have to sign off soon. Last tip for tonight. I have this song on a 45, the song on the flip side of the 45 was also in the movie, was done by another famous black entertainer ALONG WITH the lead actor!!!

I have to work today so here are the hints for the day, I'll make them more direct:
The singer was one of 2 singers that had a dance craze going in the early 60s.
The lead actor is better known for cop movies.
If I told you about the lead actors side kick, you'd figure it out the movie pretty quickly, if you are old enough to remember the early 80s anyways.
The black singer on the flip side of my 45 (see previous hint from last night) I would say is more famous and awarded than the singer of this song.

DJ, this guy was popular before Jimi, 50's-early 60s really was his heyday.
OK here's a hint about the movie, a white guy who was popular in the 80s had a song that charted (fairly well) off this movie also, AND the song title is the title of the movie!

And the white guy I mentioned before is definitely considered a country artist.

Byron, no not Right Stuff. I would consider the movie to be an action/comedy.

Byron is very close on the guess of who the artist is, you usually can't think of one of theses artists without thinking of the other.
The lead actors sidekick was an orangutang.
The song itself involved drinking.
The movie involved prize fighting.

I think I know the answer. It was any which way you can is the movie starring Clint Eastwood released in 1980. The song is Whiskey Heaven sang by Fats Domino and on the flip side is Beers to you by Clint Eastwood and Ray Charles.
