80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Eating & having sex, is a good start but you can't do it 24/7 even if you wanted to!
There are many people who don't need to fill the rest of their time with simple or complex believe either in God or in the non existence of God.
They may also find other things to do like helping people and doing good.
They may spend their time searching of answers to the problems of humanity.
They may feel that by acting in the right way to others is the only requirements needed to to be fulfilled.
If there is a omnipresent and omnipotent force which wish that humanity follow the greater design then is greatness would not wish for sycophants who waste there time trying to make others waste there's in mass debates on the existence of said force.
This greatness would simply want those who rolled up the sleeves and got on with sorting out the mess caused by ignorance.
However if there was a force which tried to imped those in these action by convincing them that if was just by believing they had fulfilled their roll in the great journey of life.
That would be a horse of a totally different colour, Don't you think?
So one one hand we have people Eating, having sex, & believing.
And on the other we have people Eating, having sex, & doing.
If you want things in a black and white manner!
But it's not as black and White as question suggests, DON'T YOU THINK!

What, do you only behave ethically because God will punish you if you don't? That's pitiful.
The meaning of life is to improve our species, its wisdom and its well-being. Working together in cooperation and compassion, we can do much. We may even be able to save the world from destruction by global warming. We don't need a god or a religion to do that, just human values.
Hedonism wears thin as you grow older, but self-respect and honor do not.

I don't think humans know the meanings of life any more than my dogs do. Yet, my dogs do only good things to humans and other animals.
Everyone defines their own personal reason to live. The fact that you have been told telltales about the meanings of life to connect with your god does not make others live without meanings. That's only what you assume.
My reason to live is to build up memories that I can enjoy when I am on my death bed. Memories that I did good things and made a difference to others. Definitely not to glorify imaginary things like god.

It is a nonsense to look for a meaning of all this nonsense.
Search for the pleasures of the body and the mind and you will start appreciating life a lot better. Life just is life and has no meaning but you can always make life meaningful to you.
You are thinking too much about life instead of enjoying life and that is a waste of your time.
If believing in a god or goddess makes you happier then go for it.

Meaning is a two-way street: we sometimes intend the things we say or do to have a certain purpose or meaning and we infer meaning from the words or actions of others. What I mean by what I say and what you infer from my words may be different, but both may also be valid. That's why, after 400 years, we're still trying to figure out Hamlet.
Life, with or without a god, is much the same. It is what it is, but we humans have an innate desire to find or create meaning in it. Certainly, if there is no god and no afterlife, death is the end of all meaning and should be avoided while life is livable.
Enjoy the ride!

We survive, eat and have sex because WE WANT TO!
Humans aren't required to know the meaning of life. You don't make up a fake story like God just to say you have the answer.

Believe it or not, that is how most of the world's humans live. Just trying to get enough food to hammer out the next generation. Religions always tend to drift away from their original message, and assume a form that creates a nonworking religious class supported by the labor of others.
That way the religious folks can worry about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, while the worker bees get to worry about where thier next meal is coming from.

What does whether or not God "exists" have anything to do with the other part of your statement regarding survival, food, sex??? They are on two separate planes of existance.
Whether or not you believe in God, is a personal issue. Survival is instict just as eating and maybe even sex are.
People going hungry? Couples breaking up? This has nothing to do with our belief in God's existance.

Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy, founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early third century BC. It proved to be a popular and durable philosophy, with a following throughout Greece and the Roman Empire from its founding until all the schools of philosophy were ordered closed in AD 529 by the Emperor Justinian I, who perceived their pagan character to be at odds with his Christian faith. The core doctrine of Stoicism concerns cosmic Determinism and human freedom, and the belief that virtue is to maintain a Will that is in accord with nature.
In the life of the individual man, virtue is the sole good; such things as health, happiness, possessions, are of no account. Since virtue resides in the will, everything really good or bad in a man's life depends only upon himself. He may become poor, but what of it? He can still be virtuous. A tyrant may put him in prison, but he can still persevere in living in harmony with Nature. He may be sentenced to death, but he can die nobly, like Socrates. Therefore every man has perfect freedom, provided he emancipates himself from mundane desires.
