It's likely that the light came on because the engine needs to be checked.
Probably rolled over a mile mark on the odometer - like 30,000 miles or something. The light comes on for specified service intervals, too.

The check engine light is on because one or more of the systems the computer monitors is returning a value outside the parameters the computer expects to see. It could be something as easy as a loose fuel cap allowing air in the system to something as complicated as a fuel injector not working properly.
To find out, have your mechanic scan the system for error codes.
Ignore anyone who suggests you disconnect the battery to reset the light. That will not resolve the problem, and in fact can make it worse. I've had to tow several to the dealer to have the security system reset after someone decided unhooking the battery was the proper fix to a check engine light.

First thing to do - tighten your gas cap as tight as it can get...there is a sensor for that..ugh!! more than likely that light means you have an emissions control problem....a canister, dirty air filter, PCV valve bad, may not be too serious.....follow the suggestion of taking it to a shop and having them plug it into the computer for a diagnostic....do not, repeat do not keep driving the car and ignoring the light.....you will be asking for a disaster if you do......

Sometimes this light comes on after so many miles to remind you to have maintenance done, when nothing is wrong with the engine. This used to happen in my Saab and the mechanic had a way to reset it

It could be anything from a mayor malfunction to the gas cap being too loose, I suggest taking it to the dealer for one of those $15 inspections, also try tighting the gas cap, believe it or not that could be triggering the sensor and may not dissapear after a couple of days, it happened to me.

probably the likely cause of your check engine light is the oxygen sensors, you did not mention the mileage but oxygen sensors have a regular change interval of about 100,000 miles. the light does not come on at regular intervals, it only comes on when a sensor triggers it. and you can have your check engine light checked at any advance auto parts for free.

It can be due to several reasons. You may have an oil leak. You may be just down on oil. Check your oil pan. Always immediately go and check with the mechanic since leaving like that can make it even worse. Especially running without oil can kill your engine.

Obviously something needs to be checked (duh!) If you go to an auto store like Pep Boys, they have a machine they can plug into your car and determine why the check engine light came on. Then you can figure out how quickly you need to fix it.
