just wondering if its a mix of our parents voices or if its just random.

Can be, but like everything else in genetics, the process is too complex, the combinations yes/no/mix are too large.

Some children look like their parents and some not. The same with voice. Then how you use your voice can alter its original characteristics.

That is why some people speaks and sounds like their relatives and some not. I have known mother and daughters who sounds very similar.

But just listen and compare singer Julio Iglesias, (try to get older records from when he was younger, more like Enrique's age now) to his son, Enrique Iglesias.

They sound different but there are some common traces in their voices, in the way they increase volume and change intonation.

I would think that it is at least somewhat based on heredity because the sound of voice is affected by the structure/shape of nasal passages, which is inherited.
Can't say for sure though, but interesting question.
