Did you have many infections like strep-throat or rheumatic heart fever when you were younger? These illnesses can leave scar tissue in your Heart or Kidney valves, or your heart problems could be congenital...something that you were born with. So, it must be something quite serious for your doc's to consider surgery. I would nevertheless, get a 2nd opinion before I would get the surgery.

You can certainly ask for a second opinion, but doctors don't contemplate surgery like this lightly. Especially on someone your age. Without knowing more about your case, it is hard to give a good judgement, but it sounds like you don't have a lot of choice. Just because you are reasonably healthy right now, and able to do what you want, doesn't mean that problems aren't right around the corner. With the surgery, you might live a pretty normal life with just the surgery and recovery time lost. Without it, you might very well die depending on which valve it is and what your symptoms are as the disease progresses

I hope I helped, and good luck
