depends on who... personally I do not care about what people say or think. I like to look good for myself. Honestly people that are over weight are all given the same reaction, but girls that are skinny or cubby are looked upon differently. I use to be really fat from age 6-12 but then I went on a diet and none stop gym, I lost a lot of weight and kept it off for a very long time but I work hard to keep myself looking good, im not skinny but i am curvy and i think that is sexy. The reaction I got from people when I lost weight was completly different. No more teasing... now everyone was my friend and that is why females are crazy about there weight. Also when a girl is walking with her man she wants to look better than the girl on the street that might catch her mans eye. And every girl likes to say she looks better than that girl next to her.

Because women are self conscious, as are some men. We care about what other people think when they see us. All of the *stereotypes* that are out there on the media about the pretty woman or the better woman are skinny/pretty supermodels and actresses. Deep down women want to be noticed, to be important, to get attention, and some feel in order to get this from men and other women they need to be skinny. It's more or less women trying to be better than each other and become the *better* one in the stereotyped image of what society generally believes a woman should be.
It has been going on long before tv and radio - advertisements with sinny women painted, during the wars skinny pretty women sang and kept the soldiers hopeful, shows such as Leave it to Beaver with his mom being the pictre perfect skinny pretty housewife, etc.

I am self-conscious about my weight...always. People always gave me a hard time in high school because I was really tiny....and now that I "filled out" a little more and am more curvy I'm sensitive about being too big (I know I'm not though). Mainly, for me, it comes down to wanting to look good in public, and from one of my roommates being weight-obsessed. Also, a girl wants a guy to think her body is hot...and the media tells us hot=thin.

The media emphasises it. They really do. There are a lot of low-fat products and women seem to actually keep track of calories in products!
But another way to look at it is...how many times is a guy asked how much he weighs? Exactly, almost never. So why would you ask a woman how much she weighs? :P

Because women worry about their body image and with a low self esteem, they worry about how others perceive them.
Women with a positive body image and plenty of reinforcement do not obsess as much. Also, once you have been large, it is very difficult for you to ever think of yourself as thin again even if you have lost a substantial amount of weight.

because us women are very self conciousious and if someone says something about there weight it makes them feel really fat even if they are just a little on the chubby side.
so really women would rather be told that they are skinny and hot then fat and ugly, if you catch my drift. and also every girl wants to be on a diet becasue they want to be in perfect condition but when they break taht diet it makes them feel worthless and FAT!

Because men and society itself put such pressure on women to be skinny and pretty all the time.It makes the ones who have a larger frame or weight very self-conscience and men make a point of running a woman down that they see is a little overwieght.

Because society and the media put pressure on women and young girls to look a certain way, at all times. When in reality, it is impossible to.

They think that men want women to be skinny even though most of us want a few curves in the right places.
