They are paying big money for a glorified mutt that just muddied the breed lines of two quality dogs (I use quality loosely).

For the thousands of dollars spend do they realize they could go to the pound and get a dog and an entire wardrobe for it and still come out with change after the vet bill?

Remember that during the holiday season... a mutt is a mutt no matter how you wrap it.

No they aren't - they're buying the latest fashion accessory. I feel sorry for the dogs, they'll soon be neglected when they go out of style.

Well, if they want to spend big bucks on a "glorified mutt," then that's their choice. I would assume that most of those people have a good bit of money and for them a shelter mutt just isn't good enough for someone with their standards. They need/want the "latest and greatest" and that means spending thousands on a "glorified mutt," rather than a cheap, shelter mutt. It's just like with clothes, they "need" the most expensive label, even if they can get the same thing (minus the label) at a vintage store for A LOT less. (BTW, that's not how I feel about it, that's how I assume the people that buy those dogs think.)

I think the good old fashioned mutt makes the best pet in the world! And you are absolutely correct - I would NEVER pay big bucks for a mutt when the pounds and shelters are full of them! And that is all the "designer breeds" are - crossbred animals, which means nonpedigreed, mixed breeds. AKA - MUTT!

Intelligent people WOULD realize this, but there are plenty of people willing to pay purebred prices for dogs they can't even show in the show ring.

It's better to make up a fancy name for mutts if you want to own something 'special'. That collie/cocker/shepherd looking mutt? A Greater Pewaukee Spaniel! Or Rough Coated Hilder Hound.

i had a maltipoo when I was a kid... my dad bought her for me, I'm pretty sure she cost $100. more than that and he probably wouldn't have bought her.

and if I ever want another dog I'm not paying for it. but at the time I was a lil kid so I really didn't know the difference.

well I do think it is stupid to spend a lot on a mixed dog, but I know the any poodle mixes ex:yorkipoo and maltipoo, are very popular because they are hypo allergenic. Whenever there is a market for something people will take advantage and make money.
