The lies damn lies and statistics comment was made one hundred years before by the British Prime Minister Disraeli which goes to show that nothing is new in politics. No I do not believe them so far as I am concerned my food bill has gone up more than that and my petrol has also. Government Statistics have long been a joke because they play around with how things are included or the weighting given to certain items

I don't believe any numbers the government puts out. Just like I don't believe the national debt is nine trillion dollars. Its closer to 56 trillion if you count the debts in social security & medicare. I don't blame the Shrub completely for this. Tweaking of the books has been going on a long long time.

No. I learned from President Harry Truman: "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."
There is no way to adequately measure the cost of goods sold, factor in changing buying habits, then compare to a prior period...in less than several years.
Example: the per gallon cost of gasoline goes up. So you quit driving. In what appears to be inflation, your cost of living actually goes down.

No. Statistics can be scewed and I never have completely trusted the government anyway. There is just no fullproof way to measure the cost of goods and services around the US.
