Painting with a broad brush, let's say that the Left wing represents Democrats and the Right wing represents Republicans, (but keep in mind that in Both parties there are Liberals , Centrists, and Conservatives; and each Party has a religious Right and Religious Left.

It's easier to define the Parties by their differences, (again in vey broad terms - for these are by no means mutually exclusive - but more sterotypical:

Democrates favor / believe in:

Big Government, Entitlements / Tax & Spend / "Feel Good" legislation - in other words proposing noble or altruistic goverment programs like Universal National Health Care - but without a logical plan to implement it, or pay for it. They would have LESS State & Local governing, and MORE federal oversite & federal gov't programs & rules.

Democrats are pro-choice and pro family farm, working class, and small business

Democrats are PC, and abhor accountability

They want to tax the rich to "redistribute" the wealth to the poor and those who do not want to work,

Democrats do not like or support the US Armed Forces

Democrats Flip flop like fish in the bottom of a boat depending on what they think the voters want to hear.

Want more & better Public Housing

Want more Privelages and Better Prison treatment and facilities

The Republicans:

Fat Cats / Big Business / The Military Industrial Complex

Want LESS Big Government / Less Government in General

Want Less Taxation, Believe that tax breaks create real jobs and true prosperity - NOT Government Programs

Support a Strong, Modern, Well-Motivated, Well-funded US Military

Believe in taking care of poverty and homeless at a local level - not with well fare entitlements that create welfare generations

Want Maximum sentences, and more Sherrifs like Arizona's Joe Arowana, who says we don't need prisons, just tent camps & chain gangs and don't coddle prisoners.

Also, if youd like to take a pop quiz, go to :www/theadvocates.org/quiz.html and take the "World's Smallest Political Quiz"

"History has tried hard to teach us that we can't
have good government under politicians. Now, to
go and stick one at the very head of the government
couldn't be wise."

To a conservative - anyone with less conservative views than themself is a liberal.
To a liberal - anyone with less liberal views than themself is a conservative.

I am an independent and enjoy watching the left wingers and right wingers flapping around in circles and getting nowhere simply because they are so out balance with the rest of society.

if i may offer a bit of a swerve...stop wasting time on attempting to define yourself in terms no one can guarantee the definition off. instead...invest your time in nurturing an open mind. listen and think of what all perspectives say about an issue. be critical but seek truth. you may rarely find it; however, when you do confusion fades. good luck.

Don't categorize yourself. Make decisions based on your head and your heart. Folks who label themselves tend to become ideologues. As the ancients knew, wisdom and happiness are in the middle.

LIBERALS
Pessimism, from the Latin pessimus (worst), denotes a belief that the experienced world is the worst possible. It describes a general belief that things are bad, and tend to become worse; or that looks to the eventual triumph of evil over good; it is the antonym of optimism, the contrary belief in the goodness and betterment of things generally. A common conundrum illustrates optimism versus pessimism with the question - does one regard a given glass of water as: "Is the glass half empty or half full?" Conventional wisdom expects optimists to reply with half full and pessimists to respond with half empty, but this is not always the case.

CONSERVATVES
Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. It is the opposite of pessimism. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out in the end for the best.
A common conundrum illustrates optimism-versus-pessimism with the question; does one regard a given glass of water, filled to half its capacity, as half full or as half empty? Conventional wisdom expects optimists to reply, "Half full," and pessimists to respond, "Half empty" (assuming that "full" is considered good, and empty, "bad").
Another paradox sometimes associated with optimism is that the only thing an optimist cannot view as positive is a pessimist. Pessimism, however, as it acts as a check to recklessness, may even then be viewed in a positive light.

Do some reading and express some opinions on conservative and/or liberal blogs. They might shed some light on your question.

if you're socially liberal: left wing
socially conservative: right wing

fiscally liberal: left wing
fiscally conservative: right wing

If you're like me, you don't fit into either category perfectly so you say eff it and call yourself independant.
