I have done this before because I HAD to wash some clothes and we ran out of detergent. I only added maybe a couple of teaspoons because I knew it would sud pretty bad. Nothing came out of the washer but the clothes smelled like the dish soap which I didn't care for.

I have used Dawn and other dish detergents in a pinch. They haven't harmed my clothes at all. It might be a good idea to test a hidden area on the clothing before using just to be safe.

If you run out of detergent you can use regular soap.. grate it on a cheese grater into the washer. I've done it before and the laundry turns out fine. I agree that dishwashing liquid will create a bubble avalanche.

I have done lots of loads with different amounts and found that it works really well. Only use 1 tsp. for a small load, up to 1 Tablespoon for a large, very soiled load. It works great, didn't make too many suds and cleaned the clothes wonderfully! It would definitely be a suds problem if you used too much. I only used original Dawn, and it got rid of any grease spots too. :)

I just used it before I read the comments above. Believe it or not I used 1/2 cup for this load. It turned out fine and does't have any smell (apple blossom on the label). It was Dawn Ultra.

Yes , I had work clothes that smelled like stale grease. Laundry soap didn't remove the funk but 1 tps of Dawn & 1/2 cap of softener . ( small load ) Didn't make excessive suds. Clothes smelled clean. Victory is mine. :)

I ran out of detergent and I used Dawn liquid dish soap...2 tsp. for a load of clothes, and it worked great. I had softener, so I added that too.

It makes too many suds and that will hurt the machine. Just wait until you can buy laundry detergent.

I got banished from using our new HE top loader washer..because I ran a small load and used up one of my wife s new Tide soap s little cute packets of soap...so how am I supposed to use just a small amount??
I put the washer on a regular cycle, cool water, with two rinses, and hit the start switch,
USE ONLY TWO DROPS OF DAWN PER LOAD..
Worked flawlessly,..she never knew,
