Penta-dactyl evolution.
This goes back to the change from fins to limbs. The lobe-finned fish gave rise to the tetrapods. The distal end of the fin correlates with the hand/foot. There were radial bones in the fin tip that map directly to the phalangeal bones in fingers & toes.

'Tiktaalik' is the fossil that links the lobefin to the tetrapod- video. Fingers came before the fish left the water!

guess its just an evolutionary thing. Many species have 4 or five toes on each foot or paw(or whatever) so maybe it's just the best number to be able to survive and evolve, like many species have two eyes. I don't see how the amount of toes would help but..

We're actually rather primitive mammals and five digits per foot is the primitive state for mammals. Even walking with the foot flat on the ground (as opposed to on the toes or hooves) is the primitive state.

For balance. If we didn't have our toes the way they are we couldn't walk right.
