Where did this tradition start?

In this New York Times article from 1883 about Christmas stockings, it doesn't mention hanging the stockings by the fireplace at all; only by the end of the bed.

In our house, it was because we didn't have a fireplace. I suppose it all comes down to what's most convenient for the family.

They probably get bored of hanging them over the fireplace.
Or some people probably dont have fireplaces.

I guess some people are afraid of starting fires, assuming they left the fireplace on all night. Or, maybe its just more convinient for them.

lol never heard of that before maybe if there feet get cold they have socks close by dump out the stocking stuffers and wears the stockings
