Hi there am sorry to hear of your little ones discomfort, my daughter started on sma gold at birth, and she drank water from day one too, she was constipated and when she eventually managed to have a bowel movement, it was green in colour. My health visitor recommended i changed her milk to aptimil stage 1 or cow and gate comfort, i changed to cow and gate and it was very thick, so i got the aptimil and she has been absolutley fine with it, it also helped her colic too and i think it was easy for her to digest. I dont think it will do her any harm to change milk, if it is not agreeing with her, but just ask your health professional first. Good luck,
try giving her a bath and when you are going to give her water put a little sugar in it, this will help her go too give her the water luke warm, that should help, but see about changing milk. Have a nice xmas xx

My baby has been constipated since he was 2 weeks old. I have had several suggestions to try from the doctor and I even took him to a GI specialist to make sure everything was OK...Here is what I have learned in the past 6 months.
Baby is only constipated if the stool is hard and dry. If it is wet & pasty...it is sometimes normal for a baby to go several days without going.
1) You can add 1 tsp of Karo Syrup to the baby's bottle 2x's a day.
2) Give pedialite...like 4 oz a day.
3) I have changed formula several times...I am currently using Nestle Good Start because it has the lowest Iron content on the market. So far it is the best one for him.
4) They told me to give him suppositories. I have used them and they work. The problem with them is that my baby has gotten dependent on them and he is just now learning how to poop. So, I would suggest this be the last resort.
5) Give prune or pear juice. 4 oz a day. I suggest pear because at that age prunes gave my little guy horrible tummy cramps. If he won't take the bottle you can add it to his formula. (Per GI specialist)
6) I was told by a homeopathic doctor to use baby acedophelus and Flax Seed. Neither worked for me but I gave it a try.
7) Eventually, doctor prescribed a stool softener.
Foods/Juices to give for constipation are: prune, pear, apricot, peach, mango, grape, plum and pineapple. (obviously some of these would not be appropriate for a 10 week old baby but pear, prune and peach should be fine.)
Foods/Juices to AVOID for constipation are: bananas, apples, carrots, berries and rice. Doctor suggested multigrains instead of rice cereals.

My little boy was constipated also-he was pretty bad with it and was getting stomach cramps and would sit there turning bright red and crying trying to go.
After trying extra water that day and tummy massage at night, the following day I went to see my HV who suggested something I never thought of-rub a little Vaseline around his anus and see if that does the trick. The result was success!
Little man passed a stool the next time he felt the urge to "go!"
It could also be that SMA is a bit heavy for her, so if the above doesn't work, talk to your health visitor about switching to a different type of milk. I was giving my son Cow and Gate, but this was making him constipated, so I asked my health visitor and she advised me to give aptamil a go.
Dinky dude has been fine since.

my baby had the same problem and after what seemed a lifetime of different "remedys" prescribed by the dr and orange/ apple juice and massage,i finally gave in to my mothers persistant nagging to try THE OLD FASHIONED WAY of water and a bit of brown sugar, within half an hour it had done the job and after only having it twice she was cured so no real sugar damage, she is now 17mth only drinks plain water(and milk) so no sweet tooth has developed and she has never been constipated since. its not ideal but i really do think its worth a try . good luck.

Laying your lo on his/or her back and moving their legs in a cycling motion gently puts pressure on the intestine, this can stimulate bowel movement.
Massaging the baby's tummy can help. Rub in clockwise circular motions from the navel outwards. This can also make the baby relax, which helps towards relieving constipation.
Maybe a warm bath would also help to put the baby at ease and relieve some of the tension in the bowels.
I personally wouldn't use any remedies unless prescribed by a doctor.
If this doesn't help then, yes I would change to an easier digestible formula.
HTH and Good luck

My son had "rabbit droppings" and bled for months and months as a baby. Give as much fluid as reasonable, slighty warm to help the bowel move. Change her milk. Cow and Gate is a good one. I used to massage his tummy, but at the end of the day it only got better as he grew up. He still suffers with IBS - both ways. (He's 11 now). When weaning, use fruit juice and mostly fruits and veg purees without adding anything else.
If it carries on, speak to the doctor. I seem to recall he took a thick liquid for a while as a baby. I suspect the advice will be similar to what you are doing. You're a good mum, just help as you can.

I think you should change her milk to be safe. My little brother had this problem when he was a newborn. My mom went to Walmart and bought some drops or something. I don't remember what they were called. So if your baby is in pain and you don't have time to let things work themself out naturally I vote go ask somebody at a pharmacy about what you can buy your baby to help with the constipation.

Your baby may just need to intake more liquids. Try giving the baby some juices. But be sure not to give them 100% juice in their bottles, you will need to add more water. So half juice half water in the bottle. If this doesn't work you may need to take your baby to see a pediatrician.
You can also try picking him/her up to get gravity to help them in their efforts, and try holding her/his knees against your chest to help them "squat" -- the natural poop position.

Gold is a rich milk, if I remember right. You could trying making it up a little less strong - but I'd ask your HV first.
Maybe a drop of baby orange juice, warmed - or the old fashioned method, cool boiled water with a spoonful of sugar in it. Dreadful these days, but guaranteed to work and its not as if you are going to give it to her regularly!
