A dictionary isn't about spelling words in the right way, it's about documenting the words as people use them. If a lot of people would start writing 'fone' instead of 'phone' both would be included in the dictionary. If everyone would start writing 'fone', the word 'phone' would disappear from the dictionary (except maybe in a special edition for old fashioned words).

Some people would know if they were good spellers, but I really don't think that a word in the dictionary will ever be misspelled.

ChatNoir is basically right but you can always check a different dictionary (there's more than one).

I suppose they'd take it upon themselves to pull the book, or report the mistake on their website (if they had one), or publicly announce it. Albeit, my math class would have to wait forever to have our textbooks changed.

People would report it somehow, they would correct it next edition, thats a pretty strange question.
