i mean they are the ones who help , straighten people out , keeping people sane so that they wont crazy and victimize innocent people.think about if it werent for them other jobs would be screwed cuz their workers are all without their treatments. so why a guy who make a stupid commercial about a greasy hamburger should earn more than they? this is so highly unfair dont you think so?

i have a degree in psych and once was a counselor. i wrote to several congressman about how i did not even have the money to pay student loan debt. plus, living in the ghetto....and clientele not even being appreciative of my help...long hours...constant compassion and listening to their problems...not life of my own... forget it! got a different job and make more doing less..in a not for profit management position. i still help people. i plan on getting a master's in PA.
AND TEACHERS MAKE WAY MORE THAN COUNSELORS!! But teachers should make $50,000/yr anyways in my opinion. atleast!!!

I do believe that it is unfair. I have my doctorate in psychology and I can't pay my mortgage or my student loans. However, I knew when I entered this field that the pay would be horrible. If I wanted to enter a career just for the money, then I would have gone into advertising and made stupid commercials about greasy hamburgers. My father even encouraged me to get my MBA. But deep down inside, I knew that business was not for me and that I wouldn't get the internal reward that I feel when I think I am helping people.
Maybe that's why the helping professions (teachers, social workers) make so little. They make up for their lack of funds by having pride and feeling good about what they do.
Too bad the bank doesn't understand that.

But yes, I agree. It is very frustrating to get phone calls from creditors while reading about athletes who just bought their third house and fifth luxury car. But it was a life I chose for myself and I love it (minus the poverty of it).

Well I have a Bachelors in Social Work my pay is ok. I have been in the field for 2 years and I have no complaints with my salary but if the state wanted 2 pay me more I would take it. I think it depends on where you live and what type of agency you work for. State agencies to me are the best cuz you might start with a low salary but after about a year you will c increases in you salary.

I guess those guys who make commercials make society happy Social Workers just fix society.

Hmmmm!!! Interesting that you might know what these people earn to categorize it as not much. C.S.W.'s are Certified Social Workers and can do psychological work if that's what they choose. They put themselves in job situations that may not pay as much as they can earn both privately or elsewhere. Psychologist's have a much better education and earn whatever they wish to earn. Most of them have their Masters and many have Doctorate degrees. Thank God that many of them do Pro Bono work and also work in places where people cannot afford to pay a regular Psychologist's fees. C.S.W.'s and other Social Worker's have chosen what they wish to do and also realize what their salary range is going to be.

The guy who makes a "stupid commercial" is a professional too but he works in an industry that has a lot of money to shell out for the end result...which could be millions of dollars in revenues for that product and company! No, it's not unfair at all. It's called free enterprise.

Psychologists in private practice can make some good money as can psychiatric social workers who do private counseling. Otherwise, most jobs in these 2 professions involve working for the government or non-profit organizations--neither of which pay very well except for top management.

Social workers do what they do for the love of people. They are helping the very poor of society usually, and therefore, are not going to be payed as much. You can get paid more, but you basically have to sell your soul in networking.

Psychologists do get paid a lot if they continue their education. It's those that stop after their BA (or BS) and sometimes Masters that end up not making that much.

I concur with Nikki

But to answer your question, I have a mixed impression of psychologists and social workers. Some of them, the most experienced and skilled ones, can really help patients and improve their lives. On the other hand, there are way too many psychologists who simply waste their patient's time. They tell them they have yet to solve the "issue" at hand, even years after therapy. It's almost as though they want the patient to see them forever. Suck all their money out.....almost like a money laundering business. So, many people like me recognize this and refuse to pay them anything. I'll solve my own problems...
