Gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, smaller rabbits, love birds, cockatiels, sugar gliders (need a whole large room to fly around in though), squirrels, chipmunks (if your state allows these to be pets), de-musked skunks.

Bunnies, guinea pigs and ferrets, should not be "kept in a cage" all the time, they need daily free time. So you would have to make an area for them to get some quality exercise. And ferrets
can be loose in your house most of the day, as long as everything is critter proof.
Mice are great to keep in the cage. You can buy all sorts of fun cages that you can attach tubes to and watch them run around. The Habitrail mouse cage is great.
Degus are nice desert critters, you can give them sand baths. Chinchilas too !

Rats & mice make adorable pets. Rats are really smart, they learn their names & love playing with each other & also with their humans. You can let them ride around on your shoulder.
Mice are tiny, acrobatic & available in lots of colors. Although nearly every rat I've ever lived with has been friendly & sociable, some mice are very shy & don't really want to be handled while others love human interaction & will jump right onto your hand when you put it in their cage.
If you have rats or female mice,it's better to have 2 or 3 of them so they won't get lonely when you're not around. Of course, get 2 boy *or* 2 girl rats so you don't have a population explosion.

Well, other than the obvious (bunnys, mice etc,)
Short tail opposums
suger gliders
hedgehogs
Prarie dogs
chipmunks
(Most have to be ordered through breeders)
All of the above need out of cage time.
Most small mammals do.

I have been raising chinchillas for over fifteen years, so I am biased.

Not only fine pets, but most interesting, friendly and clean.
