Medicine is a graduate degree. You need to get a bachelor's degree first. You are still seven years away from medical school. That gives you plenty of time to learn what you need.

That being said -- Columbia is a great university. To get in as an undergraduate, you need to have an unweighted GPA of 3.8, lots of AP and Honors classes, SAT scores in the 2100/2400+ range and a killer admissions essay.

Study hard, and you can get there.

Columbia is generally considered one of the best Ivy league schools in the United States; and is one of only a handful of such institutions that quality for this title. If you graduate from Columbia with an above average gpa, you will enjoy instant credibility no matter where in the world you want to work or practice.

Starting at Columbia, like any school, will not guarantee success, but coupled with a good work ethic, it will ensure success in any profession you choose to follow. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to find any major institution that would not recruit a Columbia grad.

It's very prestigious and thought of very highly.
However...I have a lot of friends who go there, as well as an ex-boyfriend, so I've been there a lot and talked to a lot of people--and I have to say that a lot of people aren't very happy with the school. The class requirements are really intense, and you can usually only end up taking the classes you really want to take by the beginning of your sophomore year (or the end.) It can be hard to make friends because it's big and it's also in a big city. There's not really much sense of a community.
If you really want to go in to medicine, look at Johns Hopkins--its a very good school, and its med school is one of the best in the country. If you're in to the Ivy League thing, people usually enjoy Brown and Harvard a lot.

That used to be where I wanted to go, but then I decided it wasn't worth living in New York (I'm still going to apply though). It's a very hard school to get into-I think it's rated 9th in the country. It's also very prestigious and has a lot to offer. Make sure to keep your grades up, be involved, and do well on the ACT/SAT and you could have a shot at getting in. Good luck!
