My laptop doesn't come with a DVD burner and I'd like to buy one. How should I go about doing this? How do they work? Do they connect via USB port?

This is an easy one.
1-. Connect via USB your External Burner to the Laptop.
2-. Your OS must be XP or Vista.
3-. IF number 2 is correct, your External Burner will be recognised automatically.
4-. Enjoy.

If you have 2.0 (If you bought a laptop within like the last 1 or 2 years you should have 2.0) you could buy

You can get them in USB2 or firewire.

most are USB.. and u have to install the software
