The crack is less than an inch long and has been there for about a month now. I didn't think it was a big deal but now it is turning red! Is it infected or something? Should I take him in to a vet? I don't know what to do and I am getting worried! Please help me and my turtle! Thanks!

Turning red is a sign of blood infection (septicemia), and it needs a vet's care.

If your turtle gets a crack in the future, it needs to be treated the right way to prevent this. You can learn more at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

It is probably infected take it to a vet. If you want to avoid spending money you can go to a pet store. I had bought this shell wax/ cream. Its almost like soap. All you do is take a new toothbrush, tap a little of the stuff on it and rub it around the shell, it supports it with the vitamins and gives it the strength it needs. It's supposed to help with infections and strengthen the shell so you don't get things like that. If you go to the vet though he'll probably give you something like that only antibiotic formula meant for shell infections. Well hope this helps. Good luck.

If the shell is bleeding, then it would most likely be a good idea to take it to a qualified vet as soon as possible. If the injury is not very serious, then treatment at home is fairly simple.

Remove turtle and place in a quarantine tank. Clean the injured area with clean water. Disinfect the area with iodine or betadine. Treat with Neosporin or triple action antibiotic. Let turtle be dry for about an hour after treatment. Place in separate tank with clean water. You can add StressCoat for fish as it assists in the healing process. Treat this way daily for about 2 weeks or so.

If it is turning red, it is probably infected. Turtles shells are hard, but they do contain blood vessels and can become infected just like any other part of their body. Your turtle may need to have antibiotics, so you should take him to see the vet soon.

Yeah a special exotics vet should have a look at him, has he been getting fed Calcium and Vitamin/Mineral supplements? As I think that a calcium deficiency can cause shell development problems and a weak shell.
