To get the degree of a polynomial of tow variable you must add the exponent in each term. The biggest sum is the degree.

1) first term exponent 2, second term exponent 4, last term exponents 1+ 2 = 3... then the degree is 4

2) only one term... exponents 2+1 =3, then the degree is 3
