There are two types of engine compression ignition and spark ignition.
CI ( comp ign') engines use non volatile oil as a fuel, called deisel. The air is sucked into the engine and compressed by the piston rising this causes the air to heat up. at this point the oil is injected into the cylinder and the hot air burns the fuel. To get some idea take a cycle pump and place your finger tip over the hole in the end, pump the handle a couple of times and you will feel the tip of your finger get very hot.
SI ( spark Ign) engines suck air into the engine where it is mixed with a volatile fuel (petrol or LPG), this mixture is then compressed and at this point a spark is generated in the combustion chamber which burns the fuel.
CI engines are usually quite large heavy and used to be slow
SI engines are light compact and high speed.
Both can be used for performance cars though SI are prefered for racing and high performance.
Both types are available as either 2 stroke or 4 Stroke cycle and SI engines are also available as turbine and wankle format.
2stroke 4 stroke and wankle can all be supercharged or turbocharged
all including the turbine can be fitted with an afterburner ( yup even a 50cc moped) to produce more power..
All types ( including the gas turbine) have been fitted to cars and road vehicles in the past) all have been used successfully in land speed record trials.
Forget engine capacity ( though I've a good format for that later) you need power, torque and speed.. this is more important.

Cars are a great way of transportation. Every car on the road is a good car, otherwise the company would not make them and sell them to people. Litre is the size of an engine. The way they measure this is how much air the engine can take in. I have a 5.7 L, it's also known as 350 C.I.D. (cubic inch displacement. That means my engine can take in 350 cubes of air that are one inch by one inch. With the bigger number of Litre's, the more fuel the vehicle will burn. Smaller "displacement" (or less litre) will use less gas than a car with a bigger number. There are many different set-ups for the engine. Geo makes a 3cylinder, then there are 4 cylinder. Both 3 and 4 cylinder cars have pistons that are all in a row, or inline. There are some inline 6 cylinder engines, but mostly all you will see is a v-6. The v-6 has three pistons on each side of the engine, and they attach to the crankshaft to form a V if you look at the engine from the front cutaway view. The v-8 is like the v-6, only with 2 more pistons. There are many different engine types, but for the most part, you will only see 4 cyl., V-6, and V-8's. Hope this helps you out a little bit. Wikipedia, Autotrader, and Howstuffworks are great sites to check out for more info.

There is so much to know, yahoo answers can't possibly do it.
But some basics.
The liters (or cubic inches) is the total volume of all the cylinders. A V8 will naturally have more volume than a 4 cylinder, hence, more power. A 5.7 liter = 350 cubic inches. Divided by 8 cylinders shows each cylinder moves about 43.75 cubic inches of fuel saturated air.
Power = lower gas mileage. Going green is a big thing right now, but the security and the natural good feeling of accelerating effortlessly when pushing the go pedal is worth millions to some people, like me.
A good car is one that is predictable in panic situations. Going fast is only a small factor. Braking and steering is much more important, and more difficult to properly design in a car. As an example, wait another year for Chevy's new Camaro to be released. It was designed from the ground up with every detail closely scrutinized. Safety, comfort, power, mileage, braking, steering, and good looks. Of course, other people will have their ideas of what a good car is.

First regulation is the regulation of uncomplicated experience - Caveat Emptor, (purchaser pay attention) notwithstanding the salesperson advised you while he replaced into attempting to sell you the motor vehicle is oftentimes beside the element. you need to have study the information. i'm specific you have observed that the motor vehicle salesmen want to maintain the verbal substitute on how lots your month-to-month fee would be and that's extremely perplexing to get them to assert something with regard to the comprehensive of ways lots you will actual pay. right this is the straight forward thank you to try this: deliver your man or woman calculator. in the event that they are asserting $350.00 in line with month for 60 months then multiply 350 by potential of 60 = $21,000.00. i think of you're caught with this bigger fee. you could attempt to sell the motor vehicle or refinance after it slow has long previous by potential of.
