Also when the grinding sound happens, the light flashes then goes back off.

There was a Disc in it.. wouldn't open for a bit. But the sound stopped now (so far at least). Maybe that was it.

... well, to check if it is ur cd drive... go to my computer and double click D: drive... that will spin it, u dont need a disc in it for it to do it. if it grinds then it is off.... i dont know jhow to fix it though... but it could be ur hard disc... doubtfull.... but if it is that's bad and try to get it fixed... well, try to get it fixed either way... a grinding noise in a computer is a bad thing....
also... if it is the cd drive... u should just be able to buy a new drive and install it urself...

It's your hard-drive and that's why the light is flashing ... if it's not all the time you'll probably find there are bad sectors or clusters on your drive and when your OS trys to access those bad sectors is when you get the grinding noise ... back up all your data ... and prepare yourself for a crash (although I've had a "grindy" hard-drive in a test machine for about 3 yrs) ... but if this is your main computer ...change the drive and keep the current one as a test drive

So you think it's the CD drive. Disconnect all cables from the drive. Of course with the computer unplugged. Turn the computer on again, listen for the noise. Do you still hear it? Put your ear to the PC, is it the HDD? When did this start happening?
