I can tell you exactly. 1 GB has 1024 MB but all hard disk manufactures usually count like this: 1GB is 1000 MB. So 300 GB hard disk has 300 billion bytes and we divide that number three times with 1024 we have got the number 279 GB. I hope you can understand.

The difference is because your operating system and graphics card etc all use up space. When they name a HDD as 300GB's it is just a rounded off figure and may be 292 MB's, then the OS takes a bite out of it.

That seems normal to me, but you still have a huge amount of storage space.
